Over Spring 1, our learning journey is linked to the text 'Leaf' by Sandra Dieckman.

We started our new topic by finding an 'arctic habitat' themed small world area set up in our classrooms. This allowed us to get really excited about our new topic and make predictions about where we thought it may be based, who the characters may be and what may happen.

Over the next few weeks, in English, we explored the text and focused on:

  • The reading skills of: prediction, vocabulary, retrieval and inference
  • Use of apostrophes of possession
  • Use of Adjectives
  • Expanded Noun Phrases
  • Use of Conjunctions
  • The different tenses
  • Punctuation basics - capital letters, full stops, commas for lists, question marks
  • We finished this unit by taking on the role of Leaf writing an informal letter home.

In Geography, we linked our learning to the text and focused on:

  • The continents of our world
  • The oceans of our world
  • Different climates (hot, cold and in between zones) and habitats of the world
  • Different animals that would be found living in the different habitats of the world
  • Mapwork and directions including North, South, East and West
  • The equator and surrounding countries
  • North and South Poles
  • People, places and our planet - how to look after our world

We focused on the key people of David Attenborough and Jane Rumble and their role within our world.

In DT, we linked our learning to the text and developed our clay skills by creating polar bears.

In Science, we linked our learning to the text and learnt all about Living things and their habitats:

We focused on the key scientist Sir Ernest Shackleton and his Endurance expedition. Following his journey and adventure, we explored:

  • The difference between living things, dead things and things that had never been alive
  • Naming plants and animals and their habitats and microhabitats
  • Why animals and plants are suited to their habitat
  • How different habitats provide for the basic needs of different animals and plants
  • How different animals obtain their food from plants and other animals
  • Exploring how simple food chains work
  • Naming and identifying different sources of food

In Maths (which was a stand alone subject) we focused on:

  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Fractions

In RE (which was a stand alone subject) we focused on:

  • I wonder what Christians believe God is like...

In Music (which was a stand alone subject) we focused on:

  • Sounds of growing and changing
