English
Our English learning is wrapped around the text, 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers.
Let's say, you are busy minding your own business, looking forward to going for a walk down by the harbour, in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland, when there's a knock on the door. You open it. It's a ...penguin. You're faced with a dilemma. Are you going to keep the penguin or are you going to help the penguin get back home? Where do you think he lives? What is he doing here?
Maths
Science
In Science, we have been focusing on Seasonal Changes as well as Animals Including Humans. We have made our own rain gauges to see how much rainfall we get over one week. We have worked scientifically and observed over time and used our Maths learning to measure the rainfall. We have enjoyed being meteorlogists! Bearing this in mind, we have also learnt more about penguins and their habitats. Some of us were very surprised to learn penguins don't just live in Antarctica and there are different types too.

RE
This half term, the big question was, 'I wonder who is Jewish and how do they live..,' We have learnt about the key beliefs in one God, the Torah and traditions in the home and synagogue. We have created our own mezzuzahs and written our own messages. It was interesting to link traditions to our own beliefs and experiences.

Geography, DT, Art
We have been learning about hot and cold places and using Google Earth to locate Ballycastle in Northern Ireland. It helped us to think about where we live, places we like to visit, where our nearest beaches are, what the capital is, the four countries of the UK and so much more. We then plotted the penguin's journey and learnt about how he travelled across the Southern Ocean and then to the Atlantic, before entering the Irish Sea. We were very interested to learn why it is so cold in the polar regions. We explored a range of activities, including finger knitting a scarf for the penguin, creating penguin artwork inspired by the watercolour illustrations in the text and putting our DT skills to work when we planned, designed, made and evaluated our wooden boats. We linked our science learning to this and tested if they floated. The best part was being able to use real tools like hacksaws, glue guns and drills!
