Let's Say...I am surrounded by trees. I have furry paws and sharp claws. It's dark all around me but I'm fresh after a good sleep in the day. I have a pointy nose great for sniffing out treats. Who am I?
We have continued to use the Let's Say approach to introduce the main character in our text 'The Disgusting Sandwich'. The unit has been driven by our enquiry 'I wonder if humans are like the very hungry badger...', recapping prior learning on Animals Including Humans. We started the journey thinking about the woods near us, which animals you may find there and then we went on our own visit to the woods. Some children in Butterflies class were lucky enough to spot two foxes! We also saw squirrels, magpies and lots of minibeasts. We have learnt what badgers like to eat and compared similarities and differences to humans and other animals. We linked out DT learning to this unit and made our own sandwiches, as well as writing instructions on how to make sandwiches. As the problem was the badger was hungry, we then thought about how animals need to feel safe and have enough to eat. We ended the unit with designing and making a home for minibeasts with Joel. We will place this in a suitable place on our school grounds in Spring 2.
Maths
We have been learning about Addition and Subtraction and applying our knowledge of place value to solve problems. The focus has been on reading, writing and interpreting +, -, and = signs, mastering number bonds to 20, adding and subtracting within 20 using concrete objects and pictures, solving simple word problems, recognising 1 more, 1 less and understanding the link between addition and subtraction.

Science
This half term, we have been learning about Living Things and Their Habitats. We have been exploring our school grounds, recording data on how many different kinds of birds we spotted and learnt about the 5 main animal groups. We have been asking simple questions, performing simple tests and using our observations and ideas to suggest answers . Recapping learning on Animals Including Humans, we thought about our senses and how these differ to those of a badger.

PE
In PE, we have been developing basketball skills. We have focused on movement skills, basic ball control and simple passing to develop agility and coordination.
DT
As part of the cooking strand in DT, we have been learning about cooking and nutritious meals. We designed our own disgusting sandwiches and then decided to make healthy, edible ones we could eat. We learnt how to be safe and clean before making the sandwiches. We practised our cutting skills and evaluated them afterwards.
Geography
This unit has given us the opportunity to explore our local area. We have been learning about the woods, places to visit and explore. We used Google Earth to identify areas and potentially the park the badger visited. We also discussed how some people live in houses and some live in flats.
RE
We have been exploring 'I wonder why Christmas matters to Christians...'. We have learnt Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth. We have learnt key Nativity story elements, explored Christian traditions such as Advent and linked it to God's message of love and peace for everyone. Jan also visited and delivered a Godly Play session based on the Christmas story. This learning helped us prepare for the Nativity performance, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
We have also enjoyed celebrating Interfaith Week by marking it as Kindness Day. Our Peace Concert has also been a great hit!

English
We have been focusing on developing our phonics knowledge to help us decode and become fluent readers, continuing our reading programme that runs over three days. We have also worked hard to develop our comprehension skills, through hot seating, freeze-framing, conscience alleys and of course under the over-arching Let's Say approach. We have thought hard about composition and how it helps to compose a sentence orally before writing it. In the Toolkit phase, we have aimed to leave spaces between words, had a go at joining clauses with 'and' and using capital letters and full stops appropriately. Children have re read sentences to check they make sense before publishing amazing pieces for Remembrance Day, setting descriptions of woods and instructions on how to make a sandwich.
