Ancient Egyptian Hook Day

Today we stepped back into time to explore the history of the Ancient Egyptians. After we had located Egypt on a map of the world and looked at a time line to discover how long the Ancient Egyptians reigned, we became tomb robbers!

Here, we imagined that we had been hired by Howard Carter to search for ancient treasure within a tomb. We had to break into the tomb entrance and then crawl though a tight, dark tunnel. When we emerged from the tunnel we discovered the ancient sarcophagus of the female Pharoah Hatshepsut. There were hieroglyphs on the walls of the tomb and the remains of Hatshepsut's organs inside of golden canopic jars; however, there was no treasure! What had happened to it? What would we tell Howard Carter?

We sketched what we found inside the tomb, ready to report back to Howard Carter and then learnt about Hatshepsut. We discovered that Hatshepsut was an Egyptian princess, the daughter of Thutmose I. During her marriage to Thutmose II, she was given the position of God’s Wife of Amun – the highest position attainable by a woman after the position of queen.

When her husband died, Hatshepsut helped rule the nation as regent for Thutmose III. She later assumed the title and full powers of pharaoh and ruled jointly with her stepson.

Throughout her reign, Hatshepsut undertook complex building projects, including the temple at Deir el-Bahri. She also set up trade deals with foreign countries, making Egypt a richer nation.

During the afternoon, we created Lego pyramids, built paper sarcophaguses and even made papyrus paper!

We had so much fun today and can't wait to tell you all about the Ancient Egyptians!
