This half term, Year 1 students are embarking on an exciting and diverse range of learning activities, covering a variety of subjects that build on their curiosity and creative thinking. Here’s an overview of the key topics they are exploring:

Geography: "I Wonder If I Can Survive Here…"

In Geography, Year 1 are exploring the concept of survival in different environments. They are discussing what makes certain places suitable for living and what they need to survive, such as food, shelter, and weather conditions. The children are also learning about hot and cold places, understanding the different features of these climates, and how animals adapt to them.

English: "Meerkat Mail"

In English, Year 1 are reading and exploring the story of Meerkat Mail. The children are following the adventures of Sunny the meerkat and his journey through different habitats. They are working on sentence writing, using descriptive language to tell their own stories, and even creating postcards from Sunny’s travels!

Mathematics: Measurement

 

Science: Animals Including Humans

In Science, Year 1 are learning about Animals Including Humans. The children are exploring the differences between various animals and how humans are similar and different to them. They are discussing basic needs for survival, including nutrition and exercise, and exploring the importance of looking after our bodies to stay healthy and happy.

Religious Education: "What Is the ‘Good News’ Christians Believe Jesus Brings?" (The Gospel)

In RE, Year 1 are exploring the story of Jesus and the Gospel. They are learning about the ‘good news’ that Christians believe Jesus brings, focusing on themes of love, kindness, and helping others. Through storytelling and discussion, the children are reflecting on what it means to live a kind and compassionate life.

Physical Education: Net/Wall Games

 

Art and Design: David Hockney and Influences Around the World

This half term, Year 1 are studying the famous artist David Hockney. The children are inspired by his use of color and perspective, and they are creating their own artwork in his style. Additionally, the children are exploring how art influences cultures around the world, discussing different artistic styles and traditions. We will be creating our own desert landscapes.

PSHE: "What Does Being Sorry Mean?"

In PSHE, Year 1 are learning about emotions and apologies. The children are exploring what it means to say "sorry," why it’s important, and how it can help to mend relationships. They are using role-play to practice saying sorry and understanding how it feels to forgive and be forgiven.

Women in History: Amelia Earhart

In History, Year 1 are learning about the life of Amelia Earhart, a pioneering aviator. The children are inspired by her courage and achievements, exploring her journey to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. This topic sparks conversations about women in history and the importance of following dreams.

Health and Wellbeing: Be Healthy, Be Happy (Healthy Me)

Finally, in our Health and Wellbeing lessons, Year 1 is exploring the importance of being healthy and happy. Through fun activities and discussions, the children are learning about the benefits of eating healthy food, exercising, and taking care of both their bodies and their minds.


It is a wonderfully busy half term filled with learning and fun, and the Year 1 children are showing incredible enthusiasm in every subject. We are excited to see their continued growth as they move forward into the next part of the year!
