No-Bot experiences lots of different emotions though-out the book and we have been using our vocabulary skills to identify and describe his feelings.
Maths
This half term we have been busy in Maths. We have looked at addition and subtraction within 10 and fact families for our number bonds. We have learn different strategies to help us, such as using objects, our hands, number lines and mental strategies. Year 1 have been using natural resources to write their own subtraction sentences. We will be finding the difference between amounts and use our knowledge to solve problems. We will learn more about fact families using addition and subtraction. Embedding children’s understating in Year One will help them with their future learning. Year 1 have had opportunities to use natural resources to represent addition and subtraction sentences.
Following this we have moved on to sorting and recogising 2D and 3D shapes. Year 1 have been able to find shapes in everyday objects and have been looking at the explanation of 2D and 3D shapes. Children have enjoyed lots of practical lessons and have built a robot out of 2D shapes to be friends with No-Bot.
Before christmas we will move onto fractions, recognizing a whole, half and quarter. Year 1 will have a christmas themed math week, using christmas trees, santas and baubles to recongise fractions.
Science
In science we are looing at 'Everyday Materials' and will be looking at how toys have changed since our grandparents were young. We will look at the properties of different materials and how to describe them.
We have looked at the properties of materials. Year 1 received a letter from No-Bot asking us to design him a new bottom. Following this we will carry out an investigation to help No-Bot design a new bottom, and decide what material would be the best to use and why.
Our key scientist is Ole Kirk Christiansen, we will look at the material LEGO is made from following building a LEGO robot each.
Topic
In topic we have been looking at how things have changed since our grandparents are young. We have been looking at the toys that we played with when Year 1 were younger and have these are similar and different to those that our grandparents might have played with. We have created our own personal timelines then looked at a larger time scale of toys in the last century.
In the next few weeks a toy shop will be coming to the hall so the children can explore different toys.
